About Us
CLSU – Algal Diversity and Bioresources (ADB) Laboratory is an educational and research center of Central Luzon State University (CLSU) dedicated to the study of algal biodiversity, taxonomy, ecology, and bioresources.
Established in April 2021 through the support of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the University of Tokyo, the laboratory serves as a hub for research, innovation, and capacity building in aquatic biosciences.
Through interdisciplinary research, training programs, and collaborative projects, the ADB Laboratory advances scientific understanding of algae and aquatic ecosystems while promoting biodiversity conservation, environmental sustainability, and the sustainable utilization of algal resources for the benefit of science, education, and society.
Research Focus
Key research directions and priorities that guide the work of the ADB Laboratory.
Identify and characterize various harmful and beneficial microalgae species, including their morphological, ultrastructural, physiological, and genetic properties.
Screen and select microalgae strains with desirable traits for specific applications, such as high lipid content for biofuel production or high protein content for aquaculture feed.
Develop and optimize cultivation methods for mass production of microalgae, including exploring different growth conditions, culture media, and locally-fabricated bioreactor systems.
Collaborate with other units of the university (i.e., College of Fisheries, College of Engineering, College of Agriculture), other research institutions, universities, and industry partners to share knowledge, exchange resources, and accelerate progress in the field in Central and Northern Luzon.
Educate the public, students, and stakeholders about the importance of microalgae and Harmful Algal Bloom research and its potential applications and impacts in various sectors.
